Through out the years, I have had multiple dog owners tell me "my dog is just lazy" or "he loves to lay on the couch all day". If I'm being frank here, that is complete nonsense. Our dogs' bodies weren't designed to just lounge around the house to watch hours of Netflix all day on a Sunday with us. Our dogs are meant to be physically active as they are hunters and herders by nature. When we don't encourage our dogs to be active, that is when being lazy becomes the norm. Trust me, it is not your dogs' choice to be lazy, that is the reality you created.
There are so many benefits to your dog getting regular exercise, as well to you! When you run and play with your dog on a daily basis, the cardio benefits to both you and your pupper are too numerous to count. Everything from strong digestive systems, healthy bones, muscles and improved agility are all benefits to both of you.
Active dogs are less likely to exhibit behavioral problems because they are regularly burning all that excess energy. That means less digging, chewing expensive shoes, barking, whining and doing zoomies all over the house while everyone else is getting ready to go to bed. Aside from preventing these issues, providing your dog with regular exercise supports healthy aging by easing chronic symptoms and allows them to be social and explore their environment.
Exercise is also good for the mental well-being of BOTH dogs and their owners. Studies show that regular physical activity is a key factor in reducing stress in pet parents. But it also helps shy dogs gain confidence and increases their socialization skills with other dogs. Also, every dogs' exercise routine will look a little different. You want to make sure your dog has a balanced diet that is appropriate for their exercise routine and energy level.
Now get out there and go for walk or play a game of fetch with your love one!
Paws, Love and Propper Regards until next time...
